The Aethalometer AE‑36s builds on the legacy AE‑36 by adding two UV channels (340 nm and 400 nm) for superior Brown Carbon detection and spectral resolution.
Data are collected at 1 Hz (1 second) timebase—aggregatable to 1‑minute or longer intervals—for unparalleled temporal detail. DualSpot™ technology ensures that measurements remain continuous and accurate through filter loading cycles.
A self-cleaning optical chamber and extended filter tape allow operation for up to a year with minimal intervention. Combined with Automatic Data Validation and BC Index metrics, it delivers research-grade reliability in diverse environmental conditions.
AE‑36s integrates seamlessly with TCA08 or CASS systems for full OC/EC/BC speciation (TC/BC(λ) method).

Measurement Principle
Aerodynamic aerosol-laden air is drawn through PTFE/glass-fiber filter tape at controlled flow rates. Light absorption is measured across nine wavelengths from 340–950 nm. DualSpot™ compensation corrects for filter loading in real time. Source apportionment algorithms quantify fossil fuel, biomass, and brown carbon contributions.
